Philippine envoy arrives for 2nd fence-mending visitAt the time, Taipei took a series of retaliatory measures to protest the Philippines' disregard for Taiwan's jurisdiction over its own nationals and demanded that the Philippines formally apologize for the incident. But when Roxas first visited Taiwan on Feb. 21, he refused to apologize, failing to thaw the ice. Manila later responded to Taipei's outrage by firing two senior immigration officials, whom Taipei had accused of mishandling its request to hand over its nationals to Taiwanese officials. Taiwan's Foreign Minister Timothy C.T. Yang reacted to Manila's good will “in action and in words” by announcing recently that Taiwan would loosen some restrictions on Filipinos seeking to work in Taiwan. Amadeo Perez Jr., chairman of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO), which handles the country's relations with Taiwan in the absence of official diplomatic ties, arrived in Taiwan earlier Sunday also hoping to restore the damaged relations between the two countries. | |||||||||||||
