Hu rules out possibility of presidential bid

KUALA LUMPUR -- Taichung Mayor Jason Hu ruled out the possibility of running in the 2012 presidential race and called for solidarity in the Kuomintang (KMT) during a speech in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Hu stressed the ruling party must be united ahead of the Nov. 27 mayoral elections in five special municipalities — Taipei City, Xinbei City, Taichung City, Tainan City and Kaohsiung City. The incumbent has been fielded by the KMT to run in the race in Taichung City, which will be merged with Taichung County by the end of the year.

“The KMT must win at least three seats out of the five districts, and there is no room for doubt about that,” he told an audience of about 500 people.

Hu said a spate of high-profile shootings in Taichung in late May could have some negative effect in the coming elections, but voiced confidence that the voters would support him.

Hu also said that cross-Taiwan Strait unification was “a remote issue” unless Taiwan's living standards are fully guaranteed.
