GIO minister underscores modus vivendi approach

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Government Information Office Minister Johnny Chi-chen Chiang touted yesterday the “modus vivendi” diplomatic approach advocated by President Ma Ying-jeou and urged the opposition not to oppose it just for the sake of opposition.

Chiang said the flexible diplomatic approach has been successful in maintaining the number of Taiwan's diplomatic allies at 23, in apparent contrast to the administration of former President Chen Shui-bian, who used checkbook diplomacy when competing with China for each other's allies. Chen's policy resulted in the loss of nine diplomatic allies, although it added three countries to the list of Taiwan's allies — at the expense of a lot of taxpayers' money, he said.

Ma's approach works, allowing the government to use more resources to expand Taiwan's international profile and to substantially help the country shake off its image of being a troublemaker, he went on.
