Plans underway for Ma's Dominican visit

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- President Ma Ying-jeou said Saturday that his administration is still trying to work out a way to show Taiwan's concern for earthquake-ravaged Haiti without causing inconveniences for its Caribbean ally.

There should be an outcome in a couple of days, Ma told reporters during a trip to the central county of Changhua, referring to a plan to visit the Dominican Republic, which shares a border with Haiti.

The Presidential Office said a day earlier that Ma might add the Dominican Republic to the itinerary of his upcoming visit to Honduras, where he will attend the Jan. 27 inauguration of President-elect Porfirio Lobo Sosa.

Ma explained that the main consideration involved in this plan is how to avoid causing addition trouble for the Haitian government, which is already very busy handling the aftermath of the earthquake.

He stressed that Taiwan is very concerned about the situation in Haiti, one of Taiwan's diplomatic allies.

“I will be reaching almost their (Haiti's) doorstep in this upcoming trip. It would be inappropriate if I did not go there to express my concern,” he said.

The president said his charter plane will also carry more than 10 containers of medical and relief supplies for Haiti.
