Envoy visits Austrian school teaching traditional Chinese

VIENNA -- Taiwan's envoy to Austria was warmly welcomed during a visit Friday to a Catholic school in Vienna that is famous for its traditional Mandarin classes.

More than 100 students who are learning Mandarin at the school performed Taiwanese folk songs and Chinese folk dances to welcome the Taiwan representative, Chen Lien-gene.

Reinhard Hallwirth, president of Sacre-Coeur Wien, expressed his appreciation for Taiwan's support in setting up a Mandarin learning resource center at the school.

The school will strive to become a center for the promotion of Mandarin in Austria, and even in Europe, Hallwirth said.

For his part, Chen said that “Taiwan is actively promoting Chinese and traditional Mandarin learning around the world.”

He expressed the hope that the students at the Vienna school will learn more about Chinese culture through their study of Mandarin.

Chen also presented 3,200 euros to the school's Mandarin learning center, and accepted a donation of 1,600 euros from the school's faculty for the victims of severe flooding fter Typhoon Morokat in early August.

The school's Mandarin learning center, which has been in operation for two years, is headed by Lien Chi-huei, a Taiwanese scholar residing in Austria.
