Taiwan protests exclusion from APEC ministerial meet

SINGAPORE -- Taiwan has lodged a protest against a move by the host of this year's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum to exclude its delegate from a ministerial breakfast meeting of the regional group, a Taiwan official said Wednesday.

Singapore Foreign Minister George Yong-Boon Yeo invited the foreign ministers of APEC member economies to a breakfast meeting Wednesday, but the Taiwan delegate was excluded.

The official, who asked not to named, said that Taiwan immediately lodged a protest with the Singapore government, which in response expressed its understanding of Taiwan's stance.

The official said that Taiwan has asked that as a member of the regional economic grouping, it delegates be invited to all APEC formal and informal meetings.

Taiwan has never been represented at the informal APEC foreign ministers' biennial meetings, due to pressure from China. The situation has not changed despite the improvement in relations between Taiwan and China.

The 2009 APEC leaders summit will take place Nov. 14-15. Taiwan will be represented by former Vice President Lien Chan.
