Taiwan citizens may soon enter U.S. visa-free

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan has recently forged a cooperative agreement with the United States on improving travel security, paving the way for possible visa-free entry for Taiwanese citizens to the United States, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

An exchange of notes concerning the initiative was completed Dec. 19 in Washington D.C. by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States and the American Institute in Taiwan, the MOFA said in a statement.

According to the Principles for Cooperation on Improving Travel Security established between the two countries, they will work together to crack down on forged documents, share traveler information, promote the issuance of e-Passports and exchange information on terrorists, the MOFA said.

The two sides will also improve the method for exchanging information on lost or stolen passports, continue cooperation on an airborne police project and enhance cooperation on airport security, the ministry said.

These principles are requirements that Taiwan must meet before further negotiating with Washington for visa-free entry to the United States by Taiwanese citizens, the ministry added.

To facilitate the cooperation, the two sides will first set up a working group that will be in charge of identifying the substantive areas of cooperation, the MOFA said.

I don't know how soon is soon, but at least this is the first step. I hope the process will be completed soon.

Sorry my joy has been short-lived. I don't know who is telling the truth. No where on the U.S. travel or government website does it say that U.S. and Taiwan has signed an agreement. Till I see that I am not ready to believe that we are even close to getting into the visa waiver program.

This will be an illusive dream. The requiem has already been sung. USA has closed its Visa Waiver program and does not plan on extending it. Just like I said before......It is purely a figment of imagination that Taiwan will enjoy Visa Free Status to USA.

So...? Are there any advancements on the matter? The VWP won't be extended? Are Taiwan citizens doomed to need visas to the US forever?

By the way, I think Taiwan should stop to be a friend with USA now!
I never hear USA say something about this.

USA talk like "Yeaa Yeahh will be soon now in progress" to sell the stupid weapons and keep relations to keep an eye on China PRC.

Taiwan Government should wake up now!!!!!

UK can grant Visa free so fast! Same as Australia. How many years now for the progress of Visa free from USA (2006 - Present)? 3 years!!!

Think about it.
