KMT chairman’s Japan visit helps eliminate concernsLee noted that Wu, who returned Saturday from a six-day visit, had meetings with Japanese politicians, media heads and Taiwanese expatriate groups in Japan in which he pointed out that President Ma Ying-jeou is well-versed in Japanese affairs and that Ma considers Taiwan-Japan ties to be of great importance. Wu’s meetings were successful in soothing Japan’s misgivings about the KMT’s China policies since the new administration took office in May, and allowed Japan to realize the importance of mutual goodwill between the two countries, Lee went on. Meanwhile, Republic of China Representative to Japan John Feng also said Wu’s visit has helped boost cooperative efforts with Japan. In addition, KMT Legislator Lee Hung-chun, who visited Japan as part of Wu’s delegation, said the party chairman also expressed the country’s hopes of resuming bilateral negotiations on fishing rights around the disputed Tiaoyutai Islands, over which Taiwan, Japan and China all claim sovereignty. He said various Japanese parliamentarians gave Wu their word that they will try to facilitate such negotiations, and added that Wu’s suggestion of pushing for direct flights between Taipei’s Songshan Airport and Tokyo was also well-received by Japanese officials.
