AITIC admission positive sign in relations: MOFA

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) officials said Thursday that Taiwan’s admission into an intergovernmental agency as a sponsoring member could be seen as a positive sign of the thawing tension between Taiwan and China.

Speaking at a press briefing, Shih Wen-bin, director-general of MOFA’s Department of Economic and Trade Affairs said that as cross-strait tensions ease, Taiwan’s joining of the Agency for International Trade Information and Cooperation (AITIC) will have a positive effect in the country’s efforts to expand contacts with other members.

Shih said Taiwan decided to apply to join AITIC to contribute the country’s experience in economic development to other members — mainly the world’s developing and least-developed countries — as a gesture to “show its appreciation for the assistance received from other countries in the past.”
