Legislative Speaker Wang may visit U.S. in August

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng might pay a three-day visit to Washington, D.C. in a private capacity in early August, according to sources close to Wang.

The invitation for Wang to visit the U.S. was extended on May 22 by the Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based think tank, the sources said Saturday.

Wang is highly likely to accept the invitation because he wants to help repair the strained relations between Taiwan and its most important ally, the U.S., the sources said.

Taiwan-U.S. ties had soured in the past eight years under the former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration, which handed over the reins of government to the Kuomintang (KMT) Tuesday, the sources noted.

The U.S. government publicly opposed a DPP-sponsored referendum held in March to support Taiwan’s bid to join the United Nations under the name Taiwan, claiming that the referendum would alter the status quo across the Taiwan Strait.

Wang’s U.S. visit will help rebuild mutual trust and enhance interaction and cooperation between the two sides.

Wang might meet with speakers of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, as well as with state department officials during his visit. He might also meet aides of the U.S. presidential candidates of both the Democratic and Republican parties, the sources added.
