Swaziland king’s aide mulls pursuing China relations

MBABANE -- A key advisor to the king of Swaziland suggested Thursday in an newspaper interview that the southern African monarchy should consider building diplomatic relations with China.

Business advisor Ndumiso Mamba told the Swazi Observer that it was time to re-assess the current set-up in which the kingdom only recognized Taiwan and not Beijing.

“We should ask ourselves if we are doing the right thing. We should ask ourselves and find answers to the question of whether we are not swimming against the tide,” Mamba told the Observer.

Mamba is part of the king’s delegation that is currently in Taiwan to attend the swearing in of new President Ma Ying-jeou.

“Let’s see if we cannot achieve some form of relations with mainland China without antagonizing other friendly parties,” he said, in reference to Taiwan.

Mamba is the managing director of Tibiyo TaKangwane, a royal consortium which publishes the Swazi Observer.

Swaziland, with a population of around one million, is one of Africa’s poorest countries and is the continent’s last absolute monarchy.
