Top representative to U.S. Wu tenders his resignation

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan’s top representative to the United States, Joseph Wu, has tendered his resignation to new the Foreign Minister Francisco H.L. Ou, a ministry spokeswoman said yesterday.

Wu’s resignation came soon after Ou was sworn in Tuesday, along with the rest of the new Kuomintang (KMT) administration.

Jason Yuan, the KMT’s top envoy to Washington, has been reportedly named to fill the vacancy, according to local media reports.

Nevertheless, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) did not confirm the reports.

Harry Tseng, head of the ministry’s department of North American affairs, told a news conference that it will take weeks before the ministry announces the new U.S. representative.

Wu, former head of Taiwan’s top policy-making body regarding China, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) under the just stepped-down Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) administration, was tapped by the former DPP government to take the post in April 2007.
