Li Ao may not give lecture in Shanghai; no mention of talk

Former dissident and maverick independent law maker Li Ao left yesterday for Shanghai after giving lectures in Beijing — but there are signs that he may not give a lecture in Shanghai as originally planned.

Li was originally scheduled to give a lecture at Shanghai’s prestigious Fudan University but as of yesterday the university had not made any announcements about the lecture, as is customary. There was also no mention of Li’s talk on the university web site and no information for students about lecture ticket sales.

A teacher at the elite university told local media that Li may be asked to take part in an interactive seminar with students instead. Another teacher said the university was busy arranging celebrations for its 100th anniversary and did not have time to organize his lecture.

Students at the university said normally there were notices up in the university dormitories and other prominent places on campus one week ahead of an academic lecture. Lectures from famous international and local scholars and experts were also normally advertised on the university web site. Li who gave lectures in the Chinese capital’s Peking University and Chinghua University, said his talk in Shanghai was to be on Shanghai’s economic development and Taiwan’s future.
