President Chen urges KMT to change its party emblem

President Chen Shui-bian called on the opposition Kuomintang yesterday to change its party emblem, which has been made that of the country.

Speaking at a campaign rally, the president said the emblem of the Kuomintang, a white sun with 12 rays emitting from it in a round blue sky, is used in many a flag and banner.

“How come it has become our national emblem?” President Chen asked.

The party emblem is on the flag of the Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee, the banners of the Navy and the Air Force, as well as the chevron of a policeman, Chen said.

“That ought not to be so,” the president pointed out.

To prevent the confusion between the party emblem and that of the nation, President Chen said, the Kuomintang has to change its own.

“I give the Kuomintang three months to make that change,” said the president.

If the Kuomintang fails to do so, the ruling Democratic Progressive Party will change the national emblem after it wins a parliamentary majority, said the president, who doubles as its chairman.

The existing national emblem law will be amended to make that change possible, Chen added.

Chen may be mistaken, a Kuomintang spokesman said.

“The emblem on the flag of our olympic committee is not considered the national emblem,” the opposition party official said.

“Besides,” the spokesman added, “the Kuomintang does not have to change its party emblem.”

It used to be the official national emblem while the Kuomintang ruled Taiwan for half a century before Chen was first elected president in 2000.
