Secret envoys report baseless: presidential office

The Straits Times report about President Chen Shui-bian offering to send secret envoys to mainland China to sound out Beijing leaders on his upcoming inaugural speech is “groundless,” said a presidential spokesperson yesterday.

“The (Straits Times) report is purely groundless, and its contents are all unfounded,” said the spokesperson, Huang Chih-fang.

The Singapore newspaper reported from Hong Kong Friday that Beijing has rejected Chen’s offer to send envoys to Beijing to negotiate the contents of his May 20 inaugural speech.

Huang accused the Straits Times of often playing up groundless stories about Taiwan’s dealings with mainland China. He warned it against debasing itself into the mouthpiece of “certain political forces” as some media establishments in Hong Kong have been doing.

The Central News Agency cited unnamed ranking Taiwan officials as speculating that the report’s sources were from Beijing who tried to fake an impression that Chen’s speech had to be approved not only by the United States, but also by mainland China.

The rumors have been spread in attempts to create trouble for the Taiwan government, the officials said.

President Chen has stressed that he has never sent any secret envoys to mainland China since taking office, the officials added.
