Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival

This year's Children's Folklore and Folkgame Festival is scheduled to be held in Yilan from July 1 to Aug. 31. Ever since its debut in 1996, the annual folk festival has become the flagship summer event in Taiwan, featuring music and dance performances from overseas troupes, water games and mouth-watering local delicacies.
 
Two dead in Yunlin lake tragedy
Rescuers search for two youths in an artificial pond in Erlun Township, Yunlin, Saturday, May 6. The local fire department received a report at 2:10 p.m. yesterday that two junior-high school boys had drowned in the artificial lake. Both boys showed no signs of life upon rescue.

A student living near National Yunlin University of Science and Technology complained to her landlord that nearly every time she went home, she was attacked by a little wild monkey who flung itself at her through the window.
 
Mailiao refinery explosion
The Styrene Monomer plant at the Sixth Naphtha Refinery is sealed off Tuesday after four workers were injured when a heating unit exploded the previous morning. The Yunlin County Government ordered that a thorough examination be conducted immediately at the Mailiao Township petrochemical factory, which is owned by the embattled Formosa Plastics. Four workers were burnt and contused, two of whom were still in critical condition as of Tuesday evening.

22,000 chickens culled in Yunlin
Animal quarantine authorities culled more than 22,000 chickens on a farm in Yunlin County's Shuilin Township with the help of the military Saturday as part of efforts to fight avian influenza.
