Rare sight off Taitung coast
A waterspout forms off the coast of Taitung on Monday, Aug. 1. The rare scene occurred in the early morning. A driver traveling on the South-Link Highway said the vortex was very close to the road and lasted for at least four minutes. The waterspout is connected to a towering cumuliform cloud or a cumulonimbus cloud. It is often weaker than most of its counterparts on land.
Sneaky snake
Two men hold a 2.6-meter-long Burmese python captured in a house in Taitung yesterday. The owner of the place recently found two chickens missing from the hen house and thought it was the work of burglars.

Feeling stumped

Apology for absence
Taitung City Mayor Chang Kuo-chou (張國洲) bows in apology to Taitung City citizens on Sunday, July 10, for being in mainland China, rather than in Taiwan, when Typhoon Nepartak hit.
Taiwan's military continued Sunday to send personnel, machines and vehicles to Taitung County, the area worst-hit by typhoon Neparak, to help with post-disaster clean-up and restoration.
Typhoon Nepartak ravaged Taitung Friday, bringing heavy rain and the strongest wind in 61 years to the southeastern county.
The Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) Monday responded to an outraged Taitung farmer's criticism that the administration had not replied to his complaints about hot air balloons landing on his private property.
