Minister of the Interior Jiang Yi-huah said yesterday that Hualien Magistrate Fu Kun-chi's naming of his “ex-wife” as deputy magistrate is invalid, on the grounds that their divorce was fake and that the appointment of his wife therefore is in breach of the relevant laws.

Taiwan -- Hualien chief's ex-wife appointment investigated
Vice Interior Minister Chien Tai-lang said yesterday that new Hualien Magistrate Fu Kun-chi's appointment of his “ex-wife” as his deputy is valid, but the ministry will keep investigating whether the couple is still living under the same roof, which would disqualify her for the post.

New Hualien County Magistrate Fu Kun-qi yesterday unexpectedly announced the appointment of his wife Hsu Zhen-wei as deputy magistrate of the eastern county, but the appointment was immediately claimed invalid by the Ministry of the Interior for violating the law governing conflict of interest avoidance by public functionaries.

The central evaluation and discipline committee (CEDC) of the ruling Kuomintang yesterday resolved to ban Magistrate Hsieh Shen-shan of the Hualien County in eastern Taiwan from exercising his party-member rights for one year for supporting a non-KMT candidate in the Dec. 5 election of Hualien county magistrate in defiance of the party's disciplinary regulations.
