Minister of the Interior Jiang Yi-huah said yesterday that Hualien Magistrate Fu Kun-chi's naming of his “ex-wife” as deputy magistrate is invalid, on the grounds that their divorce was fake and that the appointment of his wife therefore is in breach of the relevant laws.

As the new Hualien Magistrate Fu Kun-chi is apparently trying to manipulate the law by first divorcing his wife and then appointing her as his deputy, the Ministry of the Interior is investigating whether the couple is still living under the same roof, which would disqualify her for the post.

The central evaluation and discipline committee (CEDC) of the ruling Kuomintang yesterday resolved to ban Magistrate Hsieh Shen-shan of the Hualien County in eastern Taiwan from exercising his party-member rights for one year for supporting a non-KMT candidate in the Dec. 5 election of Hualien county magistrate in defiance of the party's disciplinary regulations.

All three candidates vying for the chief of Guangfu Township in Hualien County in eastern Taiwan have been held incommunicado on charges of buying votes, yesterday, when local elections in 17 of the island's 25 counties and cities were held, setting a precedent of its kind in the history of local township chief elections in Hualien County.
