Solar power plus
Taiwan's first floating solar PV system is installed in a farm pond in Taoyuan on Thursday, April 13. Installing water-cooling infrastructure for solar power systems can increase their efficiency by 10 to 15 percent compared with those placed on rooftops or the ground. Speaking at the system's inauguration ceremony, Mayor Cheng Wen-tsan (鄭文燦) said Taoyuan's 2,800-plus farm ponds -- the most in any Taiwan municipality -- made it the perfect place for a water-cooled PV array. The ponds were previously used for irrigation and then used as reservoirs. Cheng said he hoped the floating PV system would be the first step in Taoyuan's journey to becoming a low-carbon city.

A wet ride but free
Riders enter the gates at A13 station of the Taoyuan Airport MRT in Greater Taoyuan on Sunday, Feb. 26. Two days of heavy rain over the 228 Peace Memorial Day holiday didn't deter passengers from trying out the new metro system, which offers free rides to the end of the month. The rain did, however, dump water that rolled off the roof and onto passengers at A8 station and other stations with outdoor platforms. After studying the leakage, government officials said dead leaves and other debris had clogged up the rain gutters, causing overflow. Contractors had been asked to improve the drainage system, metro authorities said.
