Jaycee Chan didn't sell out friends in drug case: agent

TAIPEI--Action movie star Jackie Chan's (成龍)only son, Jaycee Chan (房祖名), did not and would not sell out his friends, even after being detained in China for using marijuana, his agent said Friday.

After 31-year-old Jaycee Chan was arrested by public security officers in Beijing on Aug. 14 for smoking marijuana, which is illegal in both China and Taiwan, Chan admitted his guilt and provided a list of 120 entertainers from Taiwan, Hong Kong and China who also do drugs, Chinese media reported.

“I feel terribly hurt when learning that media has portrayed you as someone who would betray his friends,” Chan's agent said in a statement.

“Indeed, your action should be punished ... but everyone blamed you for things you haven't done,” the statement said.

In a post on Sina Weibo earlier Friday, the Beijing public security bureau described the media reports as simply rumors.

The case is being closely followed in Taiwan because Taiwanese actor Kai Ko (Ko Chen-tung,柯震東), 23, was also detained by Chinese authorities for smoking marijuana with Chan.

This story highlights the politics of pot in China and Taiwan. Even though alcohol and tobacco account for a staggering 50% of medical expense along with betel nut, marijuana is used for medicinal purposes all over the world and is a part of the ancient Chinese pharmacopeia. So it is time for the Chinese to reexamine their stance on this plant which has no addictive qualities like legal alcohol and tobacco and is used medicinally worldwide.
