Mainland can show good will by reducing military threat: official

TAIPEI--China should take the initiative in extending an olive branch to Taiwan by reducing its military threat and supporting Taiwan's bid to join the international community, a Taiwanese official involved in China policy issues said Friday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said China should demonstrate good will now that Zhang Zhijun, the head of China's Taiwan Affairs Office, has stressed repeatedly during his visit to Taiwan that he was here to listen to the voices of the people.

The official was responding to reports that at a seminar with scholars on Thursday night, Zhang said issues such as the Republic of China's status, its international space and the military threat remain unresolved because Taiwan is reluctant to hold political talks.

Taiwan has already made it clear several times that because there is still no consensus within Taiwan on holding high-level consultations on political issues with China, they are not a high priority for the government at present, the official said.

China should not pass off its responsibility on these issues as the result of the lack of political consultations, the official said, adding that Taiwan's people would not find such an argument convincing and would not be able to accept it.

China's military threat to Taiwan and its suppression of Taiwan in the international community do not need political consultations to be resolved because those issues can be resolved by Beijing unilaterally, the official said.
