Taipei mayor will visit Beijing to foster tourism

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin (郝龍斌) yesterday said in an interview that he will visit mainland China on June 26 to promote Taipei City tourism and to visit old friends and acquaintances.

During his press appearances yesterday, the mayor stated that he will be visiting Beijing from June 26 to June 29 with the Taipei City Government Department of Information and Tourism. The mayor and representatives of the department will attend the Beijing International Tourism Expo 2014 (北京國際旅遊博覽會) to promote Taipei City tourism. Hau will also be conducting municipal politics exchanges as well as visiting the metro system of Beijing in hopes of learning from the system's anti-terrorism protocols.

Hau has also stated that be plans to visit old friends and acquaintances, including officials and representatives from the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (海峽兩岸關係協會) and the Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) who have visited Taipei City in the past.

When asked about a possible meeting between Hau and TAO Minister Zhang Zhijun (張志軍), the mayor replied that the details of his schedule are still being discussed and organized. Hau has also rejected media assumptions of his trip being a preparation for the upcoming presidential election, stating that the trip is purely for tourism promotion.
