China dissident supports service trade pact protest

TAIPEI--Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei has voiced his support for Taiwanese student protesters leading a movement against a disputed trade-in-services pact with China, praising them as "educated, well-mannered and rational."

In a video circulated on the Internet March 26, the Chinese artist describes the students as a group of "responsible" young people who have expressed their calls in a "rational" and "orderly" manner.

They were exercising their civil rights in expressing opposition to public and political issues, Ai said in the video.

Netizens wrote to Ai asking him about his views on the movement March 25, a day after police forcibly removed protesters who broke into the Cabinet complex in protest over the trade-in-services agreement.
