BEIJING -- Chinese Communist Party General Secretary Xi Jinping made his first recorded comments Tuesday on last week's high-profile meeting between the top cross-strait policymakers from Taiwan and China, calling the event an “actively significant” development.
Xi said that the Feb. 11 meeting between Wang Yu-chi, minister of Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council, and Zhang Zhijun, minister of China's Taiwan Affairs Office, resulted in agreements on several issues and obtained positive results.
Xi made the remarks in his capacity as the head of the Communist Party of China while meeting with Lien Chan, an honorary chairman of Taiwan's ruling Kuomintang who is currently on a four-day visit to China.
Lien, a former vice president in Taiwan, and Xi first met in their capacities as representatives of their respective parties in November 2012.
