BEIJING--Ruling Kuomintang Honorary Chairman Lien Chan (連戰) will meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平), who serves concurrently as general secretary of the Communist Party of China, during a visit to Beijing this week, Fan Liqing (范麗青), spokeswoman of the Taiwan Affairs Office (國台辦) of China's State Council (國務院), said yesterday.
It will be Lien's second meeting with Xi in as many years.
Lien, who is also chairman of a foundation on cross-Taiwan Strait peaceful development, will lead a delegation composed of representatives from various sectors in Taiwan on the visit to Beijing from Monday to Thursday during which they will attend a forum and exchange ideas with their mainland China counterparts, according to Fan.
Yu Zhengsheng (俞正聲), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC, 全國政協), China's top political advisory body, will attend the forum, Fan noted.
Fan said the delegation is expected to be greeted in Beijing by Zhang Zhijun (張志軍), head of the Taiwan Affairs Office under China's State Council.
During the visit, Lien will visit sites related to Beijing's urban and countryside construction projects, the spokeswoman said.
She said that last year, Lien led a Taiwanese delegation to Beijing and added that "his upcoming visit is valued highly by the general secretary."
Lien's visit will be meaningful in the expansion and deepening of exchanges between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait and will be beneficial to enhancing mutual understanding between the two sides, Fan said, lauding Lien for making significant contributions to promoting the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.
Lien became the first top KMT leader to visit China since 1949 when he led a delegation to the mainland in April 2005. Since then, he has maintained warm relations with top CPC leaders including Xi's predecessor Hu Jintao.
