WASHINGTON -- The United States said Tuesday that it welcomed the historic meeting between Taiwan and China's two top officials responsible for cross-Taiwan Strait affairs that took place earlier in the day in Nanjing.
Department of State spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. welcomes the steps both sides of the Taiwan Strait have taken to reduce tensions and improve relations between Beijing and Taipei.
"We encourage authorities in Beijing and Taipei to continue their constructive dialogue, which has led to significant improvements in the cross-strait relationship, so we certainly welcome the resumption," Psaki said.
She was commenting on the landmark meeting between Mainland Affairs Council Minister Wang Yu-chi and Zhang Zhijun, the head of China's Taiwan Affairs Office.
Her view was echoed by Evan Medeiros, the National Security Council's senior director for Asian affairs.
On the sidelines of a forum on China held by the Center for American Progress think tank, Medeiros lauded the meeting as an encouraging and important development.
"United States strongly supports efforts between China and Taiwan to improve cross-strait relations, and we are glad to see the recent meeting."
