Guangzhou is the third Chinese city in which the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) has set up a permanent office following the establishment of similar facilities in Shanghai and Beijing last year. The council now has 58 overseas permanent or preparatory offices, including eight in China.
The next upgrade to a permanent office will take place in Qingdao in northeastern China Sept. 23, with two new preparatory offices scheduled to be opened in Chengdu and Dalian before the end of the year, according to TAITRA.
In light of the improved cross-Taiwan Strait trade and economic relations, the council said it is set to upgrade more preparatory offices in China to permanent status, which will be led by senior TAITRA executives and will offer consulting services to Taiwanese businessmen and help them explore new business opportunities on the mainland.
In terms of other overseas markets, TAITRA said it plans to hold an opening party Nov. 4 for a Taiwan Trade Center in Myanmar's capital city of Yangon, with a new preparatory office expected to be set up in the Philippines in the near term.
