Beijing hospital sees safety in Taiwanese fish

Groupers, a kind of fish bred in southern Taiwan's Pingtung, were certified both by the country's Council of Agriculture and the county government, helping ensure product quality, said Chiang Li-mong, the vice president of Bao Dao Healthcare.

Patients who stay at the hospital for postpartum care feel safer and healthier consuming fish from Taiwan, as much of the seafood produced in China is not accompanied by health safety reports, according to Chiang.

High quality is key in establishing a high-end postpartum-care center at the hospital, he added.

A Chinese citizen, Li Jingzheng, said she was considering sending her daughter for postpartum care to the maternity hospital.

“Taiwan's healthcare is more advanced than that in China, and food from Taiwan seems to be of better quality,” she said.

Before being transported to China, the groupers were first processed in Taiwan, using a rapid freezing technology that retained their freshness, said Chen Yi-rui, a breeder from Pingtung.

Every fish bears a QR code, which allows customers to access its production information by scanning the code with their smartphones, Chen said.

Bao Dao Healthcare, which was opened in August last year, is the first maternity hospital jointly funded by Taiwan and China. It aims to introduce Taiwanese medical expertise to China and to help supplement obstetric services in the Chinese capital, where maternity-care resources are in short supply.

The hospital in Haidian is being run on a Taiwanese model and 17 of its 226 staff members are from Taiwan.

Given the 200,000 babies being born each year and an average spending of NT$70,000 (US$2,416) on each birth, the obstetric services market in Beijing is expected to generate NT$14 billion in revenues, according to the estimates of local Taiwanese businesspeople.
