Friendlier environment on way for mainland students

TAIPEI--Taiwan will continue to promote a policy of allowing Chinese students to pursue tertiary education in the country and will spare no efforts to build a friendly environment for them, a spokesman for the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said yesterday.

The government has been making efforts to internationalize local campuses, and to that end, the authorities, including the Cabinet-level MAC, have been working on plans to attract foreign students, including those from China, the spokesman said.

There have been continuing efforts by the authorities to improve the living and learning conditions for Chinese students, the official said in the council's response to requests by the Taiwan Affairs Office under China's State Council for a promise to eliminate policies seen as discriminatory toward Chinese students in Taiwan.

As an example of this, the Cabinet has recently approved a draft bill proposed by the MAC to include Chinese students in the country's national health insurance program.
