Taiwan-China exchanges need transparency: Su

TAIPEI--Cross-Taiwan Strait interaction is necessary, but the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) wants it to be open and transparent, DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang said yesterday.

The pro-independence DPP believes Taiwan should face China actively and confidently because the two sides "are only separated by a stretch of water" and interaction is necessary, Su said.

The international community's expectation of Taiwan and China is that they can deal with their differences through dialogue and exchanges, he added.

In fact, according to Su, the two sides are very different, with Taiwan a free and diverse democratic nation, while China is still under one-party rule. However, the DPP believes the values Taiwan upholds are the future trends for China, he added.

The DPP will continue to insist on the values of "freedom, democracy, peace and an equal footing" in terms of cross-strait relations, Su said when asked about former Premier Frank Hsieh's landmark visit to China last week.

Hsieh, a DPP Central Standing Committee member who served as premier during the previous DPP administration, is the first high-ranking DPP official to be allowed to visit China.

There are many different individual opinions on cross-strait relations within the DPP, but the party has been consistent in its position on the issue, according to Su.

Su, however, did not comment on the details of Hsieh's trip, which included several meetings with top Chinese officials on Taiwan affairs, as well as with Dai Bingguo, a member of China's State Council.

Hsieh's China visit was in a personal capacity, DPP spokesman Wang Min-sheng noted, adding that Hsieh was not representing the party.

Hsieh and his entourage returned to Taiwan later in the day after the five-day visit.
