Gov't, China might restart talks on additional flights

TAIPEI--Taiwan and China are expected to restart stalled negotiations on cross-Taiwan Strait flights in early November after talks on the issue ground to a stop in July, the Civil Aeronautics Administration said yesterday.

Earlier discussions on such arrangements, which were held in the Chinese city of Taiyuan in July, came to a halt after the Chinese civil aviation authorities raised concerns about air traffic congestion, officials said.

However, local officials said they expect the talks to resume later this year, in conjunction with discussions on additional flights to fill the expected higher demand during the Lunar New Year holiday period.

The talks could begin in early November, they added.

Taiwan and China, represented by the Taipei Airlines Association and the Cross-Straits Aviation Transport Exchange Council, respectively, hold talks on air transport once every six months.
