China's top cross-strait negotiator to make 10-day visit in mid-September

TAIPEI--China's top negotiator on cross-Taiwan Strait matters, Chen Yunlin, will make a 10-day visit to Taiwan in mid-September at the head of a cultural exchange delegation, the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF) said yesterday.

Chen, president of China's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS), and his delegation will seek to draw on Taiwan's experience in the creative industry since the association set up a center in Taiwan in June for exchanges in the field of calligraphy and art, the SEF said.

The delegation's visit, from Sept. 10-19, will include trips to Taiwan's outlying islands of Penghu and Kinmen and also to Hualien, according to the SEF.

During Chen's last meeting in Taiwan with his counterpart, SEF Chairman Chiang Pin-kung, the Chinese trade negotiator had expressed an interest in visiting Hualien on the East Coast but the idea was quashed because of an approaching typhoon.

"Chen then suggested that he visit Taiwan again soon after the recent cross-strait negotiations," said SEF spokesman Ma Shaw-chang, referring to the finalization of an investment protection pact and a customs cooperation agreement between Taiwan and the mainland in August.
