Hsiao denies accusations of China message carrying

SHANGHAI--Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Hsiao Bi-khim denied yesterday accusations that she has been forwarding messages from DPP officials to Chinese authorities.

Hsiao, who is visiting Shanghai, implored the public "not to think too much about it. Do not over-interpret it." Hsiao has close ties to both DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang and former DPP Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen.

Hsiao made the remarks after a conference to discuss the opportunities and challenges to the peaceful development of cross-strait ties in her capacity as a board member of the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, a government-funded pro-democracy group which jointly organized the conference with the Institute for East Asia Studies in Shanghai.

Hsiao said her mission was to absorb opinions and that she would not make public speeches or carry messages for anyone.
