Shilin market's famous fried chicken clucks to Shanghai

The China Post news staff--Shilin Night Market's much acclaimed Hot Star Large Fried Chicken (豪大大雞排) officially opened in Shanghai yesterday.

Upon its opening, more than 200 people lined up, and more than 1,000 pieces of deep fried chicken breast fillet — one of the most popular snacks in Taiwan — were purchased within five hours.

"Crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside; no other brand can compare," praised a Shanghai resident, surnamed Lu, as she stood at the head of the line. She has never visited Taiwan, but Lu heard from friends that Hot Star's servings are larger than a person's face. "I wasn't disappointed," she said upon receiving her chicken.

While the prices are higher, costing NT$15 while most fried chicken is sold for NT$10 to NT$11, Lu believes that Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is worth it, because each piece is not only bigger than most, but also carries the distinctive taste of Taiwan.

To ensure that customers get the authentic Taiwanese taste, Hot Star founder Wang Qing Long traveled to Shanghai and fried the chicken himself for the first three days. In an interview, Wang has stated that he has registered 15 variations of the Hot Star name to prevent others from using the logo.

Wang has also said that the only way to combat against other fried chicken stores is to insist on good quality through the seasoning, marinating time and type of oil used for frying.

Hot Star Large Fried Chicken is expected to open 15 more stores in the Shanghai area.
