KAOHSIUNG -- The Kaohsiung City Tourism Bureau is collaborating with China UnionPay, a popular issuer of bank cards in China, to offer discounts to card users as part of efforts to boost tourism in the southern Taiwan port city, officials said.
Chinese holders of China UnionPay cards will receive special discounts when they use their cards at designated shops, the Kaohsiung officials said, adding Chinese tourists can also enjoy discounts on the city's metro system and reduced fees for using the tourism bureau's smartphone app.
In addition, China UnionPay, which issues both debit and credit cards, said Chinese nationals will be able to access their money from over 80 percent of ATM machines in Taiwan.
According to the city government's statistics, the number of Chinese travelers who visited the city reached 1.04 million in 2011 and generated about NT$7.56 billion (US$253.02 million) in annual revenues, a 28 percent increase compared to figures for 2010.
