Taipei, Kaohsiung talk up tourism at expo in Beijing

BEIJING -- Two Taiwanese cities taking part in the Beijing International Tourism Expo (BITE) promoted their cities as tourist destinations yesterday, the eve of the opening of the exhibition.

The Taipei City Government enlisted well-known songwriter Vincent Fang to share his favorite scenic spots in Taipei, while the Kaoshiung City Government had Mayday, a noted Taiwanese rock band, serving as its spokesman.

At the news conference, Taipei officials also displayed 3,000 pineapple cakes — a favorite delicacy among Chinese tourists — arranged in the shapes of some of the city's most well-known landmarks such as the Taipei 101 skyscraper, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall and the Maokong gondola.

Fang also introduced four theme trips centered on the arts, gourmet dining, shopping and fun in Taipei.

The Taipei officials also offered prospective Chinese tourists the chance of winning gold trinkets worth 20,000 yuan (US$3,140).

Mayday, meanwhile, promoted various theme spots in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan.
