HK students kick off 27-day tour with aim of traveling by any means green

TAIPEI--Three female students from City University of Hong Kong embarked on a 27-day tour of Taiwan on Tuesday, with the aim of traveling by environmentally friendly means.

Cheng Hiu-tung, Chan Siu-tung and Ng Ka-wing, first-year students in the university's Department of Public and Social Administration's Environmental Policy program, plan to travel around Taiwan by bicycle and public transportation.

Their trip is being sponsored by a Hong Kong travel website called Run Run Go Travel, with some assistance from the Taiwan Tourism Bureau.

The bureau said it will subsidize the students' accommodations during their stay in Kenting on May 24.

The three young women will record their Taiwan experience on the Hong Kong travel website and it is hoped that other Hong Kongers will be encouraged to tour Taiwan, the bureau said.

Cheng, who is on her seventh visit to Taiwan, will travel by bicycle, while her two classmates will take public transportation.

“Taiwan has good public order, and as long as I don't ride the bike at night I should be safe,” Cheng said, adding that she plans to cycle at least 100 km each day.

She said she has a total budget of NT$20,000 budget (US$677.05) and will stay mostly at temples and churches.

On her previous trips to Taiwan, Cheng said, she did not manage to visit Yilan, Hualien, Kinmen, Matsu, or Penghu, but hopes to do so this time.

Chan and Ng, who are touring Taiwan for the first time, said they are not brave enough to tour the island by bike.

They will take public transportation and enjoy Taiwan's diverse scenery and topography, which is very different from Hong Kong's, they said.

Chan and Ng said they want to visit popular tourist destinations, such as Chingjing Farm, Alishan, and Kenting's beaches, and are especially looking forward to seeing Alishan's famous sunrise and sea of clouds.

The students were scheduled to tour Keelung on Tuesday, then move on to other areas such as Nantou, Yilan and Kenting.

Hope they enjoy their time here. There are wonderful places to see. I just wish the government would enact better policies to encourage cycling and make it safer than it currently is.
