Hong Kong, Macau representative offices to open in May: Mainland Affairs Council

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Macau Special Administrative Region established respectively their temporary offices in Taipei last December to prepare for the permanent offices.

The Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Culture office has eight officials and staff members in the Uni-President International Building in Taipei.

Macau has four officials and staff members who will be working in the office located in the Taipei 101 Financial Center.

The main functions of the Hong Kong and Macau offices will be handling issues including trade, culture, education, technology, travel and medical exchanges between the two regions and Taiwan, council officials said.

The offices will also help provide help to Hong Kong and Macau residents in need of emergency assistance during their stay in Taiwan.

There are presently about 27,000 people from Hong Kong and 12,000 Macanese people living and working in Taiwan while about 2.3 million Taiwanese visit Hong Kong and 700,000 visit Macau each year.

Hong Kong Financial Secretary John Tsang will attend the opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Economic, Trade and Cultural Office in Taiwan, said office director John Leung.

The Macau government hopes the new office will also improve crime-fighting and judicial cooperation between Macau and Taiwan, said the council officials.

The imminent opening of Hong Kong and Macau offices in Taipei is also in response to the upgrading of Taiwan offices in the two areas.
