Ma rules out meeting with Chinese leader if re-elected“If re-elected, I will absolutely not meet with the mainland Chinese leader during my new four-year term,” Ma said in an interview with a local cable TV news station. Relations with China have been a sensitive issue in Taiwan's polarized society, particularly during national election seasons. In an effort to reassure the public of his commitment to defend the Republic of China's sovereign status, Ma said in the interview that he would by no means discuss sovereignty issues with mainland China if he is reelected. “I will definitely not negotiate unification issues with the mainland nor will I do anything that might undermine our national sovereignty or Taiwan's dignity in the coming four years,” Ma added. Ma, however, said it was necessary to continue economic and cultural exchanges with China, saying such engagements are beneficial to Taiwan. He further acknowledged that many problems existed between Taiwan and China but said his administration has worked very hard over the past three-plus years to lower tension across the Taiwan Strait. “Whatever we have done is aimed at contributing to our national well-being,” Ma said, adding that cross-strait rapprochement has helped improve Taiwan's international relations and has thus created benign cycles. November 30, 2011 mtsai16@ @ cloggedwithgutsThere you go again, linking every comment that discomforts you to pan-green propaganda. (By the way, it's unnecessary to give gratuitous emphasis to the party you hate by supersizing it. Further, you had better check the plural spelling for your favorite word.) joesun369 swas simply analyzing the following quote from MYJ: "If re-elected, I will absolutely not meet with the mainland Chinese leader during my new four-year term," Ma said in an interview with a local cable TV news station. joesun read between these lines perfectly. | |||||||||||||
