Taiwan, China to discuss tourist program expansionTalks between the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association and China's Association for Tourism Exchange Across the Taiwan Straits will be held in Beijing Thursday, with the tourism program and travel safety expected to be on the agenda. At a news conference in Beijing, office spokesperson Yang Yi praised the development of Chinese travel to Taiwan, whether through tour groups or individual travel, and said the Chinese authorities had a favorable attitude toward expanding the program. Taiwan's tourism sector had hoped the individual traveler program, which was launched in late June and currently allows up to 500 visitors per day, would bring the sector a new and lucrative revenue stream. But only residents of Beijing, Shanghai, and Xiamen have been allowed to travel to Taiwan independently, and one topic of discussion at Thursday's meeting may be to expand the scope of the plan, which has been disappointing to date. | |||||||||||||
