China urged to end vetoes of bids to join UN bodies

TAIPEI--Premier Wu Den-yih said yesterday that China should not veto Taiwan's bids for membership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as both organizations concern the fundamental human rights of safety and health.

The country's bids to join such U.N.-affiliated organizations and other nongovernmental organizations have time after time faced strong opposition from China, he noted.

Wu made the remark at a meeting following a briefing by Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) officials on the present status of Taiwan's bids to join the organizations.

According to MOFA officials, Taiwan is pushing for observer statusin the ICAO and in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as a higher status at the WHO.
