Presidential Office denies King's remarks on cross-strait meetingKing Pu-tsung, executive director of Ma's re-election campaign office, remarked on Sunday during his visit to the United States that Ma had not ruled out the possibility of visiting mainland China if re-elected during the next campaign. The statement was severely criticized by Tsai Ing-wen, the opposition Democratic Progressive Party's presidential candidate, as inappropriate to be released by anyone other than Ma himself. Regarding further media reports which claimed that the government had been preparing for the signing of a peace agreement with mainland China, Presidential Office Spokesperson Fan Chiang Tai-chi (范姜泰基) refuted such as intentionally misleading reports, quoting the president as having noted that no plans for cross-strait visits have been made. According to Fan Chiang, Ma believes that the time for the leaders of Taiwan and China to meet is yet to come. The Kuomintang's (KMT) principles in the cross-strait relations have not changed, and the government will continue promoting various exchanges with China as originally planned, Ma was said to have pointed out. The president believes that currently many issues take priority over political negotiations in cross-strait relations, and there exists no agenda in such negotiations, Fan Chiang added. Also, Ma had noted in a presidential office release that no matter what his destinations are while traveling, he would only be representing the Republic of China as its president. Many are talking to visit mainland China, their main destination! | |||||||||||||
