Military prepares to meet 1st China carrierBy Joseph Yeh,The China Post The Ministry of National Defense (MND) yesterday said it has been making preparations in response to the China's construction of its first aircraft carrier and has listed anti-aircraft carrier tactics in its annual military drill ever since 2008.

According to media reports, China's first aircraft carrier — a remodeled Soviet-era vessel — is scheduled to go on sea trials. But the official launch of the carrier will not be made until October 2012, according to a recent Hong Kong news report. The Chinese aircraft carrier plan was also confirmed by Chen Bingde, general staff of the People's Liberation Army (PLA). However, according to local newspaper report, the MND will not test the military's anti-aircraft carrier capability until next year's annual Han Kuang drill, causing some experts to question if local troops will be ready to meet the latest military threat. The ministry will be prepared to respond to the latest threat and test the armed forces' ability to counter the new force, he added. Meanwhile, the MND also announced yesterday it will be launching a five-day computer-aided war game from July 18 to 22, to test its combat strategies and tactics in the face of a simulated invasion by the PLA. The war game will feature land, sea and aerial maneuvers keyed to a possible Chinese invasion. The computerized war game is part of Taiwan's annual Han Kuang 27 military exercise. A live fire drill was already conducted in April. Hau also noted that the result of the simulation on whether the invading PLA troops or defending local ones prevail, is not of major concern of the MND since the main task is to help the nation's military force to make adjustments and improvements. 2 Comments Submit Your Comment July 14, 2011 frommainland@ Reply PLA vs ROC Army? Enough is enough.. Chinese don't fight Chinese. We should stand side by side and make peace not war. If independence is what Taiwanese people opted, so be it. I'm behind it 100%. KMT government preserved the traditional Chinese culture so well. If one day Taiwan becomes independent, I hope they will continue doing it and the DPP government will do the same..
