MAC head reiterates the country's China policy

The head of Taiwan's top China policy-making agency yesterday reiterated the country's long-running guideline toward Beijing, which is both sides do not deny each other's right to govern, even if they don't recognize the respective governments.

Quoting President Ma Ying-jeou's remarks the previous day at a ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Chairwoman Lai Shin-yuan said the principle had been made crystal clear by the ruling administration for years.

“Under the Constitution of the Republic of China, our government will continue to maintain the status quo and pursue cross-strait peace without sacrificing our national sovereignty and dignity,” she added.

When asked to comment on the difference between Ma's China policy and that of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen, who used the Chinese phrase “he er butong he er qiu tong” (和而不同和而求同) to sum up their approach toward China, Lai said the eight words are too brief and obscure to be understood by the people.

The eight Chinese words could be loosely translated into maintaining the differences between the two sides while trying to forge consensus.

“The DPP and Tsai should make their China policy more clear and understandable,” she added.

The party should also make more practical moves instead of paying lip service, she added.

The MAC chief further noted that the opposition head used to say her party was seeking to build a peaceful and stable cross-strait relationship. However, this is what the government has been doing for the past three years.
