Cross-strait undersea communication cable under debateThe National Communications Commission Chairwoman Su Heng and Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Kao Chang both appeared before the Communication Committee when the issue of national security was raised as the reason to suspend the discussion until further clarification from the Defense Department and National Security Bureau were heard by the Committee. At the center of the debate was the possibility of eavesdropping at the cable connection point on the mainland's side of the infrastructure, as well as the single-calling rate initiative for Taiwan's outlying islands that had been in discussion for more than 2 years. “A undersea cable jointly owned by the governments on two sides of the Strait will not only reduce operating costs but also guarantee quality of service,” said Su, who also agreed with the concerns raised by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Wang that eavesdropping was a issue and needed to be resolved “through consultation with the Defense Department and the National Security Bureau.” As for the single-rate schedule initiative for the outlying islands, Su indicated that the rate schedule had been developed by Chunghwa Telecom and it would take another three or four years to implement the adjustment. | |||||||||||||
