China No. 2 market for Taiwanese farm goods

TAIPEI -- China has emerged as the second largest export market for Taiwan's agricultural products following successive procurements by Chinese trade missions that visited Taiwan in the past few months.

For the first five months of this year, the overall exports of Taiwan's farm products rose 10 percent to more than 690,000 metric tons from the same period in 2009.

The export value in the five-month period surged almost 19 percent to US$1.55 billion, according to figures compiled by the Council of Agriculture (COA).

But purchases by China registered a much higher growth rate of 34 percent to US$187.14 million.

The sharp increase enabled China to surpass Hong Kong and the United States to become the second largest export market for Taiwan's farm products, trailing only Japan.

To expand export sales for Taiwan's agricultural products, the COA will launch a series of new promotional campaigns at the 2010 Food Taipei Show that will run from June 23 to 26 at the Nangang Exhibition Hall of the World Trade Center in Taipei City.

The Taipei International Food Machinery & Technology Show will also be held at the same site during the same period.
