Shanghai mayor to visit Taipei for first time to lead exchange delegation

Han will arrive at Taipei Songshan Airport at 11 a.m. Tuesday and will attend the Taipei-Shanghai city forum the same day, held at Grand Formosa Regent Taipei.

During the forum, both Han and Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin will deliver keynote speeches and will sign four cooperation memorandums to boost cultural, travel, science park and environmental protection exchanges, marking the first-ever cooperation and exchanges between municipal cities across the Taiwan Straits.

After the forum, Han will visit the Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Girls High School to talk with high school students about the 2010 World Expo, which will open in Shanghai on May 1, and the Taipei International Flora Exposition, which will open on November 6 this year.

It would be the first time that a mayor of Shanghai, China's largest city, has visited Taiwan.

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin led a delegation to visit Shanghai in June 2008.

The two mayors will also attend a performance by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra at the National Concert Hall Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, Han will visit the National Palace Museum, the Bei-Tou Incinerator, and the Taipei Mass Rapid Transit system. He will also visit Taiwan's landmark skyscraper Taipei 101 and the Eslite Xinyi flagship bookstore.

Han will visit Cheng Hsin General Hospital and also visit Taichung City, Taipei County and Taoyuan County on Thursday, before returning to Shanghai Friday morning.

Informed sources said that during his stay in Taiwan April 6-9, Han will also call on Lien Chan and Wu Po-hsiung, honorary chairmen of the ruling Kuomintang, and Speaker Wang Jin-pyng of the Legislative Yuan, Chairman James Soong of the People First Party, and Chairman Yu Mu-ming of the New Party.

Meanwhile, the Taipei police department said that a flexible traffic control will be enforced around Grand Formosa Regent Taipei, including Zhongshan N. Road, Xinsheng N. Road, Nanjing East Road, and Minsheng E. Road, so as to secure smooth proceeding of the Taipei-Shanghai city forum and the lodging safety of Han and his delegation.
