Warming relations with China would benefit regional peace: MAC head

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) is letting the international community understand that warming relations between Taiwan and China can bring greater stability and peace to East Asia, MAC Chairwoman Lai Shin-yuan said Tuesday.

As part of the initiative, MAC Deputy Chairman Chao Chien-min will give a keynote speech on cross-Taiwan Strait relations and Taiwan's policy toward China during a Taiwan-Japan forum later this month in Japan.

But Lai would not say if the speech is the first salvo in a campaign to explain a proposed economic cooperation framework agreement (ECFA) between Taiwan and China to other countries.

The top official in charge of relations with China would only say that the MAC will do its best to give Taiwan's friends in the international community an understanding of Taiwan's priorities in promoting the development of cross-strait relations.

As for the MAC's efforts to push the controversial ECFA domestically, Lai said she believes the council will be able to sell the trade deal to the grassroots successfully through sincerity and straightforward language.
