Updated Sunday, November 22, 2009 11:53 am TWN, CNA Few seen to seek China diploma accreditationChen Cheng-teng's estimate was made regarding recent news of Taiwan's plans to recognize diplomas conferred by 41 prestigious universities in China. Chen said that not many Taiwanese holders of diplomas from China will seek accreditation, although more and more Taiwanese are studying in China. He also refuted reports that there are 100,000 Taiwanese who have received diplomas from China universities. The Ministry of Education recently cited Chinese statistics showing that prior to 2007, some 14,907 Taiwanese students had received diplomas from China universities, he noted. That figure, added to the 2,000 to 3,000 Taiwanese graduates in 2008 and 2009, brings the total to no more than 18,000, he said. However, not all of the 18,000 graduates would seek accreditation in Taiwan, he added. To start with, the Ministry of Education will not recognize medical diplomas obtained in China, and those account for about 50 percent of the total, Chen said. In addition, Taiwan will only recognize diplomas from 41 Chinese universities, and that will further cut the number of possible accreditations to no more than 5,000, he said. Other restrictions would reduce the number of graduates seeking accreditation to between 2,000 and 3,000, according to Chen. Subscribe to The China Post and save 25%. Click here |
