Taiwan names tourism representative to China

TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Yang Jui-tzung, deputy chief of the Executive Yuan's Third Directorate that is in charge tourism affairs, has been appointed Taiwan's first tourism representative to China, the Tourism Bureau announced Friday.

The appointment followed a consensus reached recently between the two sides to set up semi-official tourism offices in each other's countries for the first time in history. Applications for the establishment of the proposed offices were filed respectively by the Taipei-based Taiwan Strait Tourism Association (TSTA) and China-based Cross-Strait Tourism Association (CSTA) Oct. 20 in Hong Kong.

According to a statement released by the Tourism Bureau, Yang's official title in his new position will be director of TSTA's Beijing office. The agency's principal mission will be to promote Taiwan tourism among Chinese citizens, the bureau said.

Beijing has previously announced that Fan Guishan, a former department chief of China's National Tourism Administration who is currently vice secretary-general of the CSTA, will be its first tourism representative to Taiwan.
